Second and third Governor (1985-1993)
Hernandez Colon ran again against Barcelona in the elections of November 1984 and was victorious by about 54,000 votes (48 to 45 respectively). Mainly because of an internal division of the opposition party. Won re-election in the 1988 election against his rival, Baltasar Corrada Del Rio, this time 49 to 46 of the vote. Hernandez Colon became a governor who was traveling in his third and last term as governor. It also sponsored a failed bid for Puerto Rico was the site of the 2004 Olympic Games. During his last term as governor his Partido Popular Democratico and faced many accusations of corruption scandals, particularly in the legislature.
In June 1991 announcement that Hernandez did not seek reelection. On January 11, Hernandez Colon resigned as president of the Partido Popular Democratico, a position he assumed for 23 years. The then Senator Victoria Munoz Mendoza hit series chosen as president of the party and later a candidate for governor.
